ADVERSITY OF THE FAITHFUL

After these deeds of faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and entered Judah; he encamped against the fortified cities, thinking to win them over to himself.

(2 Chronicles 32:1, NKJV)

King Hezekiah had been faithful to the Lord. Yet, his kingdom was invaded by the King of Assyria, who had conquered numerous nations. Hezekiah prepared himself and his people, and prayed with Isaiah the Prophet. God delivered them.

Adversity comes to everyone, even the faithful.

Sometimes people think that they can avoid trouble by pleasing God. They are trying to earn God's favor. The problem is, we cannot earn God's favor. We should not do good deeds to earn God's favor, but because He has already demonstrated His favor. We serve God out of gratitude for what He has done for us, not to try to manipulate God into giving us what we want.

When adversity comes, it is not necessarily a punishment for sin. It may be an opportunity for God to do a marvelous work in your life.

When adversity comes, don’t panic.

Hezekiah did not panic. Neither should we. He trusted that God would help him. So should we. Faith is the antidote for fear.

Prepare.

Hezekiah began to make appropriate preparations. He prepared himself and his people for battle. Trusting God does not mean neglecting our responsibilities. Do what you know God wants you to do and trust God for the rest.

Partner with other believers.

Hezekiah insulted his military leaders. He also prayed with Isaiah the Prophet. He did not face the situation alone. He insisted other believers to help him and pray with him. We should do the same. When trouble comes, find some like-minded believers to help you and pray with you.

Pray

Hezekiah prayed. On this occasion he prayed with Isaiah the Prophet. Yes, we do need to spend time alone with God in prayer. But we also need to pray with others. Find a prayer partner who will pray with you and for you.

Adversity will come. When it does, don't panic. Prepare, partner, and pray.
