How do you react when you face adversity? Everyone faces adversity. How we handle adversity is the important thing.
Handling adversity is the theme of Psalm 46. It is a psalm written by the Sons of Korah, a division of the ancient priests of the Temple. This psalm was written to be sung in a high pitched voice, by the maidens, in worship. In the opening verses, the psalmists declare the reason that they will not fear adversity.
God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear...
(Psalm 46:1-2, NKJV)
We need not fear adversity when we trust God to protect us, strengthen us, and help us.
In this opening statement, the psalmists declare a three-fold reason for having no fear. They declare God is their refuge - He protects them. Realizing God's protection eliminates fear. Also, they declare God is their strength - He strengthens them. God has unlimited power; all the power we will ever need. He can handle any problem we will ever face. Also, they declare God is their help in times of trouble. Not just any help, but a very present help. He is there when we need Him. His help is very real. Knowing God will help us eliminates fear. Sometimes, people believe that God is ABLE to help, but question if He is WILLING to help. God IS willing to help those who trust Him. That help may be in a form we don't expect, but it is always right.
The key to all of this is faith. Do you trust Him?
