Worship is great when your heart is in it. God honors sincere worship. His presence is felt in a special way. That makes us want to worship Him more. It is a very positive cycle.
Praising God is the theme of Psalm 66. This anonymous psalm was written to be sung in worship. The psalm commands the listener to praise God, and gives several reasons why. The opening verses set the tone.
Make a joyful shout to God, all the earth!
Sing out the honor of His name;
Make His praise glorious.
(Psalm 66:1-2, NKJV)
Celebrate God's goodness with glorious praise.
First, the psalmist tells us to "make a joyful shout." This is a celebration. This celebration is directed to God. It is also about God; we are to "sing out the honor of His name." Worship is a celebration of God's goodness. Certainly there are times for solemn assemblies. But there are also times for celebration and praise. God deserves our praise.
Second, the focus of our worship is to be "the honor of His name." Worship is not about us. It is about God. Our focus is to be on Him and Him alone. We should celebrate His wonderful attributes and thank Him for His works.
Third, our worship is to be "glorious." Half-hearted worship will not do. We should give God our best effort. Even if you are not a trained musician, sing at your very best level. Offer God praise that is worthy of Him. Worship Him with all your heart. Give Him your complete attention. Don't worry about the temperature or furnishings of the room. Don't pay attention to the people around you. Focus on God alone and give Him your best worship.
God is glorious. Give Him glorious praise!
