REFUGE

When life gets tough, where can we turn for refuge? People rely on many things for protection from the dangers of life. The Bible tells us where to find ultimate refuge, a place of safety and peace during the difficult times of this life - God. One passage of the Bible that describes this is Psalm 91. The anonymous psalmist wrote these words:
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.” ...
He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge...
(Psalm 91:1-2, 4; NKJV)
Here the psalmist gives us several characteristics of God which give us reasons to trust Him. First, He is "the Most High." He has authority over all things. Second, He is "Almighty." He has infinite power. Third, He is called a "refuge' and a "fortress." He protects and shelters those who come to Him for help. That same idea of refuge and shelter is described another way, when the psalmist states, "He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge..." Like a bird protects its young under its wings in the nest, so the Lord protects and shelters those who trust Him.
The key is to "dwell in the secret place of the Most High." We must enter a relationship with Him through faith in Jesus Christ. To learn more, click here. When we have a relationship with Him, we must stay close to Him. We must not allow sin and the distractions of this world to interrupt our fellowship with God. When sin creeps into our lives, we must quickly confess it and repent of it to restore our fellowship with God. When we stay close to Him, we will find peace, even through the worst times in our lives.
