RELYING ON GOD

Thus the children of Israel were subdued at that time; and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied on the Lord God of their fathers.

(2 Chronicles 13:18, NKJV)

King Abijah reigned only three years in Jerusalem. He continued the sinful practices of his father, Rehoboam, for most of that time. Yet on this occasion, outnumbered and outmaneuvered in battle, Abijah and his men trusted in God; and God gave them the victory.

Our imperfections do not cancel God’s love.

Abijah was not perfect. He continued worshipping in the high places, like his father. Yet, when he turned to God for help, God had mercy on him. None of us deserve mercy. If we did, it would not be mercy. Turn to God as soon as possible. Don't wait to get your life right before you turn to God.

God honors those who rely on Him.

This passage lists only one reason God gave victory to Abijah and his people: because they relied on God. They had faith in Him.

We should have faith in God for more than help in difficult circumstances. Faith is the key to a right relationship with God. Our relationship with God is not based on our performance. It is based on our relationship with God through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins and rose from the dead on the third day. Those who trust in Him receive eternal life and become God's children.
