And he did evil, because he did not prepare his heart
to seek the Lord.
(2 Chronicles 12:14, NKJV)
Although King Rehoboam had moments when he humbled himself before God, he did not truly seek God. Evil behavior was the result.
Our behavior is the fruit of the condition of our hearts.
We tend to focus on our behaviors, but ignore the cause of the behaviors. For example, we may try to quit swearing, but ignore the thoughts and feelings in our minds that lead us to swear. If we ignore the cause, our attempts to reform our behavior will be short-lived. We must get to the root of the problem.
The root of the problem, when it comes to our behavior, is a faulty or non-existent relationship with God. He produces righteousness within us. We cannot produce it within ourselves. If we do not have a relationship with God, or if we refuse to follow His leadership, our behavior will suffer.
Seek God with all your heart and good works will follow.
When we have a growing relationship with God, He produces righteous behavior in our lives. Our behavior is the fruit. Our relationship with God is the root. Seek Him and He will take care of the rest.
